The Benefits of Music Education
Music is a unique and integral part of life. It has the capacity to inspire all students' creativity and imagination, engage them in the art of expression, immerse them in a language and history that is rich in culture, provide them with opportunities beyond the classroom and excite them about life and learning.
The skills, concepts and attitudes that students acquire as a result of music education benefit them not only during their schooling but also in the years beyond, whatever their chosen career path.
Music:
- Broadens musical, intellectual and cultural horizons
- Fosters self-esteem, confidence and a positive outlook
- Endorses the pursuit of excellence
- Focuses on participation and performance in an environment of co-operation and teamwork
- Encourages mutual respect and tolerance
- Stimulates intellectual growth
- Caters for differences in learning styles, opening avenues that students may not access otherwise
- Develops memory and demands accuracy and persistence.
Choral Groups
Choir singing can be a powerful tool in building confidence. Being part of a choir means performing in front of others, which can help you to develop your skills and overcome stage fright. As you improve and become more comfortable with singing in front of others, you may find that your overall confidence levels improve as well. Additionally, being part of a supportive and encouraging group can provide a sense of belonging and boost your self-esteem, both on and off the stage.
In our choral groups, the students are encouraged to perform as a soloist, once again building self-esteem and confidence within one's self.
At Lota State School we have two vocal ensembles:
- Our School Choir is available to all students from Years 1 – 6. Rehearsals occur every Friday morning from 8:00am
- Shining Starz of Lota is a small female vocal group. Rehearsals occur every Wednesday lunch.
Instrumental Music
- Recruitment occurs in Term 4 each year.
- Information about applying for the Instrumental Music Program is distributed to interested students in Term 4.
- A parent information session is offered in Term 4 outlining program details and expectations.
- Students from Year 4 - Year 6 can apply to join our Woodwind, Brass and Percussion groups - flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, baritone, euphonium & percussion instruments. Students have 30-minute lessons in the Music Room every week.
- For students to participate there is a levy of $40 and $100 hire fee for a school instrument, if needed for the year. These amounts are approved by the P&C Association under the Student Resource Scheme – Participation Agreement. This is to cover for resources, music scores and maintenance of instruments etc... Agreement forms need to be completed every year.
Extra-Curricula Clubs (And Societies)
Choir
Our choir has steadily grown in numbers over the last 2 years. Students of all abilities are encouraged to become a member. Rehearsals occur each Friday morning in the Music Room. Choir members are exposed to a wide variety of genres with culminating performances at the end of each semester at the Performance Assembly.
Instrumental Music
The overarching purpose of the Instrumental Music Program is to provide students with the opportunity to become musicians by experiencing the expressive qualities of music through learning to play a band or orchestral instrument and participating in concert bands and orchestras as performance ensembles.
Instrumental Music is built on a comprehensive combination of learning styles and experiences. Students develop increasing confidence and musical sensitivity throughout their years of learning as they engage with progressively complex techniques and a broadening range of genres and styles of music.
